The Facilities and Building Operations Division has a part-time opening based primarily at the Main Library downtown Elgin but may require occasionally travelling to the library branches. This position is responsible, in conjunction with other Facilities staff, for the upkeep of the Main Library building and branch facilities. The ideal candidate will be required to have basic construction and maintenance experience which may include: carpentry, drywall work, patching & painting, tile and carpet installation, plumbing.
The mix of duties for this  position includes, but is not limited to:
  • Maintenance tasks to keep building and outdoor facilities clean, safe and orderly
  • Snow and ice removal, as needed
  • Room set-ups for programs in accordance to specifications
  • Transportation of equipment and materials in library vehicle
  • Providing maintenance assistance at branch locations


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 4+ years related facility and maintenance experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency with mechanical equipment
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills, including basic computer skills
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record (copy of driving record will be requested upon hire)
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and lift items weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to climb a 2-story ladder
  • Ability to do snow removal and operate mechanical snow removal equipment
  • Experience and/or knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), a plus


10 hours per week; Monday - Thursday (4:00 pm - 9:00 pm) and occasional weekends

Hourly Rate: $13.85 per hour
