Security Guard.   Gail Borden Public Library has an immediate opening for a temporary Security Guard.  This temporary position may extend for up to 6 months and requires flexibility to work a varied schedule. The individual in this position will patrol the interior and exterior of the Main Library, as well as the Rakow Branch and South Elgin Branch. This position requires the ability to make continuous rounds of all public and staff areas, including parking areas. 

 

The mix of duties for this position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assisting staff in maintaining appropriate customer behavior
  • Filing Incident Reports for unusual or disruptive incidents
  • Assisting in monitoring theft detection
  • Performing a total security check of Library facilities after closing
  • Other duties may include performing a variety of maintenance functions as needed

 

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license and clean driving record required. 
  • Ability to continuously make rounds throughout the Library’s indoor and outdoor areas and work independently. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to relate easily with individuals of diverse backgrounds. 
  • Basic computer skills. 
  • Prior police, fire or military experience strongly preferred. 
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.

 

18 hours per week (temporary); schedule includes day, evening, and weekend hours.

Hourly Rate:   $15.16 per hour

The Coordinator of Grade School Services will manage our grade school space: ‘The Youth Center’.  The ideal candidate will bring their high-energy, creativity, and tech skills to coordinate school-aged programming at the Main Library and two branch buildings.  With a heavy focus on STEAM, MakerSpaces (including our new LulzBot 3D printer) and administration of the Battle of the Books program, you’ll be part of a collaborative team of 6 librarians along with Associates in our busy, fun, and creative group. 

 

Qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited school
  • Minimum of three years of experience in public library services to children, including reference, programming, and supervisory experience
  • Extensive knowledge of children's literature
  • Must be passionate about working with kids and have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to communicate well with children and adults
  • Highly developed organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and be able to adapt to changing work situations and job requirements
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations
  • Spanish language speaking skills, a plus

 

Full-time (37.5 hours/week), exempt position; must be available to work days, evenings & weekends

Gail Borden Public Library has a part-time opening at the Main Library for an HR Assistant to help support Human Resource operations for a staff of 200+ individuals. This position is under the direction of the Director of Human Resources and will be primarily responsible for HR clerical support functions, including but not limited to: recruitment, orientation and onboarding, training, and benefit administration.

 

The ideal candidate must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to relate easily with our diverse staff. The ability to maintain confidentiality is a must with this position. The individual must show initiative and have excellent time management skills in this deadline-oriented position. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the ability and desire to be responsive to the library’s mission, vision, and values. 

Qualifications:

  • Two years of college with emphasis in human resources or management, or 3-5 year's work experience with duties related to HR administration
  • Highest level of integrity and discretion
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, e-mail, and other HR software
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, in English
  • General knowledge of employment laws and standard HR policies and practices

ReaderShip Assistant.  Are you a friendly, outgoing person? If you are energized by serving the public and working with children and families, this is a great opportunity! Gail Borden Public Library is looking for a ReaderShip Assistant to join the Community Service and Program Development Division. As ReaderShip Assistant, you will be responsible for delivering Storytimes and other programs to children and families in both English and Spanish. The ideal candidate must have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. This position is based at the Main Library, but involves delivering programs throughout various locations within the library district.

The mix of duties includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assembling and presenting storykits
  • Preparing and presenting Storytime programs in English and Spanish at preschools, daycare centers, and community events with children and families
  • Assisting the ReaderShip Associate with planning and presenting parent education sessions related to children's books, reading, and library services
  • Attending community events and meetings, representing the Library in a positive and professional manner

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish
  • Must have successful experience working with young children in group settings
  • Ability to drive a vehicle and possess a valid driver's license, proof of insurance and a clean driving record (a copy of the driving record will be requested upon hire)
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications and mobile devices

18 hours per week; schedule is mostly weekdays, however, it may include occasional evening and weekend hours depending on scheduled events

Hourly Rate:  $15.16 per hour
