Teen Services Assistant

Enthusiastic about technology and excited to make an impact working with teens? We are looking for a creative and dynamic individual to join our Teen Services Team at the Main Library. As part of our team, you will provide services and assistance to our high school and middle school-aged customers in our teen center and multi-media lab.

Candidates must be proficient with technology, possess strong customer service skills, be able to work in a fast-paced environment, and—most importantly must enjoy working with teens of all ages.

In this role you will:

  • Assist with projects and services for Studio 270, the Digital Media Lab, & the Teen Services Department.
  • Assist teens with general computer use, video games, and other technology.
  • Assist teens with general homework assignments and arts & crafts projects.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Customer-focused, enthusiastic, friendly, and empathetic
  • Enthusiastic about working with teens, ages 11-18 years old.
  • A motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic and excellent time management skills.
  • Mindful, adaptable, and open to new ideas and feedback.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Experience working with teens is desirable.
  • Mac OS skills are desirable.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills desirable

Part-time: 18 hours per week; schedule includes evening and weekend hours.

Branch Customer Relations Manager 

Gail Borden Public Library is seeking a dynamic, creative, and experienced leader to join our collaborative Branch Library Services team. In this role, you will guide and inspire our Branch Customer Relations team at the South Elgin Branch, delivering exceptional service and community impact every day. The ideal candidate is a dependable, driven, and enthusiastic team member who creates a welcoming, at-home experience for every customer and confidently serves as an exemplary Person-in-Charge when called upon.

In this role you will:

  • Manage the Branch Customer Relations staff, including hiring and training.
  • Create and implement procedures and workflows ensuring consistency between the branches.
  • Oversee the Customer Relations areas of the branches, ensuring a safe, inviting environment.
  • Model exceptional customer service behavior, encourage the team to complete daily tasks, and ensure staffing levels.
  • Serve as the Person-in-Charge as needed.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in a public library position, including supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer and mobile devices.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish language skills a plus.
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to drive between the South Elgin and Rakow Branches.

Full-time (37.5 hours/week), exempt position.  Schedule may include weekday, evening, and weekend hours split between both branch locations.

Security Guard

Gail Borden Public Library has an immediate opening for a part-time Security Guard.  The individual in this position will patrol the interior and exterior of the Main Library, as well as the branch locations. The person in this position must exercise sound judgment in interpreting library safety and security policies with the ability to take decisive action when needed. This position requires the ability to make continuous rounds of all public and staff areas, including parking areas. 

The mix of duties for this position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assists staff in maintaining appropriate customer behavior.
  • Enforces correction of minor policy infractions
  • Writes Incident Reports for unusual or disruptive incidents.
  • Assists in monitoring theft detection.
  • Performs a total security check of Library facilities after closing.
  • Assists with maintenance functions as needed.

Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Illinois driver’s license and clean driving record required.
  • Requires physical stamina and mobility to perform ongoing patrols of interior and exterior library spaces.
  • Knowledge and experience in security procedures, emergency safety practices, and de-escalation techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Prior police, fire, or military experience strongly preferred.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.

18 hours per week; the schedule includes afternoon, evening, and weekend hours. Must be available to respond on an on-call basis to escalated security incidents, as needed.

Web Applications Specialist

At Gail Borden, we’re more than just books; we’re the hub of the community and a vital gateway to information. Our digital presence is the front door to that mission. We are looking for a Web Applications Specialist to join our Library Applications Team. Together, our Web Applications Specialists ensure our online environment is as innovative, accessible, and welcoming as our physical spaces. In this role, you aren’t just managing code, you’re building the infrastructure that connects our community to the resources they need.

In this role, you will:

  • Maintain and support the library’s websites and web-based services.
  • Build and enhance custom web applications driven by user insights.
  • Manage all aspects of our online resources to ensure full alignment with ADA regulations.
  • Collaborate with project participants to assess needs, facilitate input, and balance diverse perspectives to achieve effective solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science preferred; or a bachelor's degree in a non-related technology field with technology-related certifications and 5+ years of web programming experience; or an associate degree in computer programming/science and 5+ years of web programming experience.
  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, PHP, SQL, JavaScript, Python, and Perl.
  • Hands-on knowledge of web server configuration preferably with IIS, cPanel, and phpMyAdmin.
  • A proven ability to interpret and implement WCAG 2.1 AA standards in all web programming and design.
  • Ability to provide training and support to other staff and end-users.

 

Full-time (37.5 hours/week) exempt position. Work arrangement may include on-site, hybrid, or fully remote options, based on organizational needs.
