Director of Hispanic Services 

Gail Borden Public Library is the heart of the community, and a place where community gathers. Elgin is 47% Hispanic (Census 2020). The library’s Hispanic Services Department designs and implements programs and services both inside library buildings, and in the community. The purpose of this position is to fully integrate adult and family programs and services for the library district’s Spanish-speaking population. The ideal candidate’s outcomes will produce improved 21st century library services, new and relevant programs, continued reach of Spanish-speaking parents and children through the schools, jobs, technology and digital literacy, cultural and special events, and designated projects to reach Spanish-speaking customers, especially new immigrants. The ability to create and maintain healthy local and regional partnerships is key to success.

The library is seeking a professional community-minded person who knows Elgin well. If you are a bilingual leader with superb supervisory skills, ready to lead a talented and motivated team,  have a passion for bringing lifelong learning, and have experience with program development, consider applying for the Director of Hispanic Services. This position primarily works out of the Main Library location but does require traveling to various locations in the community. 


  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree of Library and Information Science, preferred
  • Excellent bilingual Spanish/English written and verbal language skills are a must
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to manage multiple projects
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience, including hiring and training
  • Minimum of 5 years of program development
  • Experience as a public speaker and presenter
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications (MS suite)
  • Knowledge of Sierra, a plus


Full-time (37.5 hours/week) - must have flexibility and availability to work a varied schedule which may include day, evening, and weekend hours

Salary:  $72,200 or higher DOQ + excellent insurance and time off benefits

KidSpace Desk & Program Page 

The Main Library location has immediate openings for 2 part-time Page positions in our KidSpace Department.  We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals, who love working with children and to support our fast-paced, energy-driven, kid-friendly department. The mix of duties includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assisting with staff activities at the Youth Center Help Desk
  • Assisting at children’s programs with tasks such as modeling story-time behaviors, monitoring the crowd, basic puppetry, or other tasks
  • Assisting children and caregivers with Youth Center computers
  • Supporting the department with many behind-the-scenes tasks
  • Retrieving materials as requested


  • Minimum age requirement - 16 years of age
  • Must have knowledge and skills in using basic computer applications including internet searches and word processing programs
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Desire and ability to work with children
  • Spanish language skills are a plus


15 hours per week during the school year and 18 hours per week in the summer; must be flexible to work a varied schedule including days, evenings, and weekends.

Hourly Rate:   $ 12.00 per hour
