Reference Librarian
Gail Borden Public Library is looking for a full-time librarian who is adaptive, kind, and innovative to work at our Main Library location. The ideal candidate will enjoy engaging with the community and consistently provide excellent customer service.
In this role you will:
- Provide general reference assistance and readers’ advisory to customers.
- Assist customers with library equipment and resources.
- Plan and present, or assist with activities, programs, and events.
- Serve as U.S. Passport Acceptance Agent.
Qualifications:
- MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school.
- Previous public library experience preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish skills desirable.
Other eligibility requirements to serve as a U.S. Passport Acceptance Agent are as follows:
- U.S. citizen or a U.S. non-citizen national
- 18 years of age or older
- Does not have a record of either: (i) A Federal or State felony conviction; or (ii) A misdemeanor conviction for crimes involving moral turpitude or breach of trust, including but not limited to embezzlement, identity theft, misappropriation, document fraud, drug offenses, or dishonesty in carrying out a responsibility involving public trust.
Full-time position (37.5 hours/week) - Schedule may include weekday, evening, and weekend hours.

Visual Displays Associate
Join our award-winning library as a full-time Visual Displays Associate to work in our fast-paced Public Relations Division as part of the Exhibits & Displays team. Gail Borden Public Library is not just about books; we’re a vibrant cultural hub renowned for innovative, large-scale exhibits and stunning displays.
We’re looking for a talented and experienced candidate to play a key role in bringing our creative visions to life. This position is perfect for people who are excited about making visitors’ experiences unforgettable with hands-on exhibits, eye-catching displays, and more.
In this role you will:
- Assist with the preparation, production, installation, maintenance, and removal of décor, display, and exhibit materials.
- Place signage and other props necessary for displays and promotions within and outside of the library.
- Track data and other key performance indicators to evaluate effectiveness of display and merchandising strategies.
- Assist the department with clerical and administrative tasks.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in designing and creating visually compelling exhibits, displays, and/or merchandising presentations.
- Project coordination experience required.
- Keen eye for detail, design, color, as well as a critical mind.
- Museum/Exhibit experience strongly encouraged.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work on ladders, and move throughout the library.
Full-time position (37.5 hours/week) - Schedule is Monday – Friday with occasional evenings & weekends based on library events.

- Communicate and collaborate across departments to align programs and services.
- Plan, present or assist with activities, programs, and events.
- Serves as a Person in Charge in absence of a manager.
- Assist customers with technology-related questions, library equipment, and explaining library policies.
We are looking for someone who is:
- A real “people person,” enthusiastic, caring, friendly, and empathetic.
- Knowledgeable of child development and age-appropriate programming.
- Skilled in public speaking, program delivery, and audience engagement.

Director of Mobile Library Services
Gail Borden Public Library is looking for a dynamic, positive, creative, and experienced Librarian to join our versatile, cross-trained, ten-member Mobile Library Services Department. The successful individual in this position will be a reliable, motivated, and energetic leader who is passionate about serving our 145,000 district residents across 65 square miles.
In this role you will:
- Lead and manage Mobile Services staff, fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Oversee a variety of engaging mobile services in the community, including Home Services, Digital Equity, Elementary School Services, Early Literacy, Bookmobile and Book Bike.
- Oversee vehicles and operations at the Davis Rd. Annex, home of the Mobile Library Services Department.
Qualifications:
- MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school.
- Minimum of five years of experience in a public library position including supervisory experience.
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or Class C License, preferred.
- Minimum of one year experience driving a large vehicle or school bus, preferred.
- Must have a safe driving record for a minimum of five years.
- Customer service experience.
- Library ILS and library outreach experience a plus.
- Spanish language skills a plus.

Branch Customer Relations Assistant
Are you passionate about libraries and providing excellent customer service? Gail Borden Public Library is seeking two dedicated Branch Assistants to join our versatile, cross-trained team! The successful individual in this position will be a reliable, motivated, and energetic team player. This role is crucial in maintaining the smooth operation of our library and ensuring a positive experience for all patrons.
In this role you will:
- Search for books, audiobooks, DVDs, and other materials using the library’s online catalog.
- Provide basic readers’ advisory and reference assistance to customers.
- Assist customers with registering new library cards, placing holds, and checking out materials.
- Handle materials by performing check-in and shelving.
- Assist customers with computer applications, printing, self-check, DVD dispenser, laptop dispenser, eReaders, and other mobile devices.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous customer service experience preferred.
- Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications and mobile devices.
- Bilingual English/Spanish language skills a plus.
- Must have reliable transportation to be able to work at the South Elgin Branch and Rakow Branch.
18 hours per week – split between both Branch locations. Schedule includes weekday, evening, and weekend hours.
