Maintenance Technician

 The Facilities and Building Operations Division has an immediate part-time opening at the Elgin Main Library. Occasional travel to the branch locations may be necessary. The ideal candidate will be required to have basic construction and maintenance experience which may include: carpentry, drywall work, patching & painting, tile and carpet installation, plumbing.

The mix of duties for this position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Maintenance tasks to keep buildings and outdoor facilities clean, safe, and orderly
  • Cleaning responsibilities which may include leaks, spills, and/or bodily fluids
  • Small scale building repairs and construction projects as assigned
  • Snow and ice removal from parking and walkways when needed
  • Room set-ups for programs in accordance to specifications
  • Driving and transporting of equipment and materials to other branch locations
  • Providing maintenance assistance at branch locations
  • Assists with monitoring of mechanical equipment in the building


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Successful work-related experience in custodial/building maintenance and/or construction
  • Demonstrated proficiency with mechanical equipment
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints
  • Valid driver’s license with excellent driving record and up-to-date vehicle insurance
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and lift items weighing up to 100 pounds
  • Ability to climb a 2-story ladder       
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather
  • Experience and or knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), a plus

14 hours per week; Saturday and Sunday daytime hours. Must be available to fill in other hours during the week when necessary.

Hourly Rate: $14.41 per hour

Hispanic Program Associate

The Community Service & Program Development (CSPD) Division has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic person with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills to help plan and provide Spanish and bilingual programs for adults and families. The person in this position will be motivated by creating lifelong learning and enrichment opportunities for our diverse community of adults and families.


Some of the responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with staff and community partners to help plan Spanish and bilingual programs in the Library and the community
  • Communicating with performers, presenters and instructors regarding programs
  • Managing program details including room reservations, set-up, equipment, attendance and promotional material
  • Writing program descriptions for newsletter and publicity
  • Interacting with customers of all ages at programs
  • Driving to and from various locations within the library district to assist with programs/meetings
  • Translating Spanish to English/English to Spanish as needed



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Written and verbal fluency in English and Spanish
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, e-mail, and internet searches
  • Valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and good driving record
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate easily to individuals of various backgrounds
  • Must be able to speak distinctly to small and large groups of people
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent reasoning ability and mathematical skills
  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple responsibilities
  • Must be able think “outside the box” to solve practical problems that may arise with programming
  • Ability to work in a high-energy, ever-changing environment


Full-Time (37.5 hours per week) – Schedule varies according to program needs & regularly includes evening and weekend hours.

Hourly Rate: $17.28 per hour + Excellent Benefits
