Customer Relations Clerk

Gail Borden Public Library has a part-time position available in our fast-paced Customer Relations Department at our Main Library facility.  The individual for this position must have excellent communication and customer service skills, the ability to problem-solve and analyze customer needs and enjoy providing top-notch service to library customers.

 

Primary job duties include:

  • Performing library material check-in and check-outs, renewals, holds, customer library card registrations and license plate renewals in accordance with established library policies and procedures.
  • Providing information to customers, answering questions, and being proactive with offering assistance in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Using technology and digital resources to assist patrons with electronic platforms.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A real “People Person”, enthusiastic, caring, friendly, and empathetic.
  • A team player who thinks quickly on their feet as decisions need to be made.
  • A self-starter with the initiative and courage to propose new ideas.

 

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Some knowledge of library clerical procedures and practices is a plus.
  • Experience in a customer service environment.
  • Basic math skills and ability to alphabetize.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish preferred.

 

18 hours per week– combination of days, nights, and weekend hours.          

Hourly Rate:  $15.00 per hour

Book Bike Summer Assistant

Are you looking for a highly engaging and physically active summer job that lets you spend most of your time outdoors? The Book Bike Assistant is a temporary 12-week position which runs from May to August and promises a lot of fun!  We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is versatile, friendly, and enjoys providing top-notch customer service and who can comfortably ride an oversized bicycle. The mix of duties will include:

  • Riding the Book Bike to various neighborhood locations, including community parks and farmer’s markets to represent the library.
  • Assisting Mobile Library Services staff members and/or Book Bike Buddies with tasks.
  • Circulating library materials and creating new library card accounts using a mobile checkout system.
  • Stocking and unloading library materials on/off the Book Bike.
  • Engaging with community members around the Summer Reading Program and other library related events and programs.
  • Assisting on the Bookmobile and other library vehicles from time to time as needed.

 

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to safely ride the Book Bike a minimum of 10 miles.
  • Completion of Bicycle Safety training will be required.
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications.
  • Experience working with children a plus.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills a plus.

18 hours per week; variable schedule which includes day, evening, and weekend hours.

Pay Rate:  $16.00 per hour.

Summer Branch Services Clerk

We are looking for friendly individuals with excellent communication and customer service skills to work at our 2 branch locations this summer. This is a temporary 12-week position which will run from May through August 2023 and promises fun and an assortment of duties. The individual in this role needs to be versatile, reliable, and love working with people of all ages.

In this role you will:

  • Assist children and adults with the summer reading program.
  • Assist with children’s and family programs.
  • Perform circulation routines, including material handling and shelving.
  • Assist customers with computer applications, printing, self-check, DVD dispenser, eReader, and other mobile devices.   

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous customer service experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications and mobile devices.
  • Bilingual Spanish/English language skills a plus.
  • Experience working with children a plus.
  • Must have reliable transportation to be able to work at the South Elgin Branch and Rakow Branch.

 

Pay Rate:  $15.00 per hour.

Home Services Associate

Do you desire to serve the community through meaningful, caring, and personal interaction with residents unable to come to the library?  Are you someone who wants to make a difference? If you’re a library lover who also has experience working with older adults and individuals with varying levels of ability, then you may be the perfect person to join our Mobile Library Services team.

We are looking for a unique individual with excellent customer service, communication and organizational skills to plan, schedule, and oversee the delivery of library materials to residents unable to come to the library due to permanent or temporary physical or age-related challenges.  This position requires working closely with our Home Services Assistant and volunteers to assist with delivery of materials and promoting library programs and resources throughout the community.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in human services/social work, healthcare, or related fields; or equivalent combination of education and experience working with elder and vulnerable populations.
  • Must be an individual who is empathic and compassionate with high emotional intelligence and resilience to deal with sensitive customer issues.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic computer applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance with a good driving record (a copy of the driving record will be requested upon hire).
  • Ability to drive library vehicles to service destinations.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to positively handle changes in existing practices, routines, and workflows.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.

Full-time (37.5 hours/week) - schedule includes mainly daytime hours with occasional weekend and evening hours. Schedule can be flexible.

Hourly Rate: $21.00 per hour + Excellent Benefits which include: IMRF pension plan, insurance (health, dental, life, vision) & great time-off benefits (Vacation, Sick Time, 8 paid Holidays, Floating Holidays, and Personal Time).

KidSpace Early Literacy Associate

Do you have a passion for bringing the library to life for our youngest customers? Are you excited about early literacy and find working with children, parents, and teachers energizing? Do you love reading stories and singing songs with preschoolers? We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic person to join our KidSpace Department at the Main Library. You will be part of a 5-Star organization whose mission is to inspire imagination & transformation. Candidates must have experience planning and presenting Storytimes and large-scale events. In addition, candidates must be proficient with technology, possess strong customer service and reader's advisory skills, able to work in a fast-paced environment, and—most importantly—must enjoy working with children of all ages.

In this role you will:

  • Plan and present weekly preschool programs and events.
  • Help plan and present large-scale early literacy and family events.
  • Provide reader's advisory and reference assistance to children and their caregivers.
  • Create themed book displays for the Early Learning Center in the KidSpace Department.

 

You will need to be:

  • Friendly, outgoing, and able to build relationships at all levels.
  • Experienced in providing excellent customer service.
  • Experienced in planning and presenting Storytimes in small and large groups.
  • Knowledgeable about children's books, materials, and technology trends in education.
  • Able to collaborate with a team and work one-on-one with customers and staff.
  • A motivated self-starter with a strong work ethic and excellent time management skills.
  • Mindful, adaptable, and open to new ideas and feedback.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experienceworking with children.
  • Excellent presentation skills for groups of all sizes and ages.
  • Early literacy experience.  
  • Public library experience desirable.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.

 

18 hours per week; School Year 2022-2023 schedule is: Tuesday 5 – 9pm, Wednesday 8:30am - 2:30pm, Thursday 5-9, Saturday - every other 9am – 5pm.  Schedule may change seasonally.

Pay rate:  $19.00 per hour.
