In partnership with Elgin Community College and School Dist. U-46, on February 4, 2-5 pm, discover Black Americans who have had an impact on our lives from science and medicine to politics and art.
This free event will feature award-winning author Candy Dawson Boyd, Broadway dancer Reginald McLaughlin and professional storyteller Linda Gorham. Free pre-school screenings for children from birth to five years of age also will take place during the festival. Conducted by School Dist. U-46 teachers, the screenings will take about 30 minutes and provide parents with a summary of their child's developmental level. Also, parents will receive information about the skills their child needs to be successful in kindergarten.

Entries Now being Accepted! Teachers, parents and kids (ask your parents), plug in the cameras and pick your favorite book. The two minute or shorter "my favorite book" contest for fun and prizes has begun. You can make a video on your own or join in a library sponsored event. Jean Bednar and Karen Schock are Co-Chairs of the new Foundation Book Sale that will take place September 20 - 23, 2012. The Foundation is asking for book donations and volunteers to sort and price the book donations. Books may be donated in the Donation Box located in the parking lot just north of the main library building at 270 N. Grove. Tax receipt letters are located on the box. From January 21 – April 14, on the 2nd Floor of the Library, the Center for Economic Progress will offer free tax preparation for individuals and families with limited income. No registration will be required. January and February hours: 5:30 – 8 pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 1 – 4 pm Saturday. March and April hours will be the same except no service will be offered on Thursdays.
All students in grades K- 12 in both the Gail Borden Library and U-46 School districts are invited to participate in the Discovery 2012 Science Expo on Apr. 14. There is no cost to families and students. Registrations are due by March 9. Volunteers are needed to help with the expo, please email
