Interlibrary Loan Print
Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows Gail Borden Public Library cardholders to borrow materials from other libraries.

To request items not owned by the Gail Borden Public Library:
  • Fill out a Materials Request Form, available online or at any service desk.
  • Submit forms at any service desk, online, or via phone to the Information Desk, 847-429-4680.
  • The library may purchase the item for the collection or borrow through Interlibrary Loan.

When Does the Gail Borden Public Library Interlibrary Loan Materials?

  •  The library may borrow materials when we do not own the item, GBPL copies are missing, or extra copies are needed for a book discussion.
Who May Borrow Through Interlibrary Loan?
  •  If you are a GBPL district or a fee card holder, you may request materials.
What Kinds Of Items Can I Request?
  • GBPL currently borrows books and audio-visual (A-V) materials.
  • The library requests A-V materials only from other Illinois libraries.

How Many Items Can I Request, and How Long Will It Take To Get Them?

  • You may have five outstanding ILL requests at a time. This includes items on order or checked out to the patron.
  • Obtaining items may take approximately a week to a month.
  • Infrequently, a lending library will charge to loan an item. The patron must approve all fees before the ILL process will proceed.
How will I be Notified When My Item Arrives?
  • You will be notified by phone, email, or mail, depending on the method you use when registering for a library card. Please keep your contact information up-to-date; new information can be submitted at the Registration Desk.
  • If GBPL is unable to borrow an item that you have requested, you will also be notified.

Where Do I Pick Up my Materials?

  • Please pick up all ILL items at the Checkout Desk, or Drive-up window, as specified when requesting item.
  • To check out an item, you must bring the card with which the item was requested to the desk.
How Long May I Keep An Item?
  • The lending library determines the loan period. To request a one week extension or longer renewal, you must contact the GBPL Information Desk at 847-429-4680, before the item is due. DVDs and videos are not renewable.
  • You must always request due date extensions or renewals from GBPL, not the libraries that sent the items to GBPL.
  •  If you have an overdue ILL item, your library card will be charged. There is a four-day grace period for fines. Starting on the fifth day after an item is due, the fine is 20 cents per day for each book or CD, and $1.00 per day for each video or CD-ROM.
Where Do I Return Items?
  • You may return ILL materials to the GBPL Checkout Desk, in the library book drops, or remote book drops.
  • You should NOT return items to the libraries that loaned them to GBPL.

What Is Reciprocal Borrowing?

  • If you, as a GBPL cardholder go to another library and use your GBPL card to check out materials, this is called reciprocal borrowing.
  • As a courtesy, you may return those items to GBPL. Allow sufficient time for the other library to receive the items before they are due.
