VolunteersTeens entering grades 9-12 are invited to volunteer at the library in the Studio Volunteer Corps. We provide a variety of services for the library including pulling carts of books, making buttons for library events, preparing crafts for the Youth Department, and making the library a great place to be.

Please bring an ID, School IDs, Drivers License, or Library Card.

Volunteer at Home until May 31th

Looking to get volunteer hours while you’re staying home due to COVID-19 precautions? We got you!

Teens in grades 9 - 12 can get service hours from the following:

  • Greeting Cards for Nursing Homes - Create one of a kind handmade greeting cards for someone in a nursing home who cannot see their family at this time.
    • Make a card with a uplifting message or quote.
    • Don't know what to say? Check out these examples.
    • Do Not address the inside of the card.
    • Take a photo of the inside and out side of each card and email to studio270@gailborden.info.
    • You will earn 30 minutes of service for each card, students can submit a maximum of 10 cards.
    • You can mail cards to the following Nursing Homes, or drop them off at Studio 270 when the library is open

  • Book Reviews
    • Write a 2 paragraph book review with a short description of the book (no spoilers) and your opinion of why you liked or disliked the book.
    • How many stars you would give the book, 1-5 stars.
    • Include your name, grade, and school.
    • Email to studio270@gailborden.info.
    • You will earn 1 hour of service for each review, students can submit a maximum of 5 reviews.
  • Book Lists
    • Curate a list of at least 10 book in a theme, like books for Harry Potter fans, Road Trip Books, Guilty Pleasure Reads.
    • Include the Title, Author, 1 sentence on why you included this book with your Name, Grade, and School.
    • Email to studio270@gailborden.info.
    • You will earn 1 hour of service for each list, students can submit a maximum of 5 lists.
  • Social Media Posts
    • Create posts on how you still can use the library during social distancing, how you will use Studio 270 when the library reopens, or what you love about Studio 270 and the library.
    • Submit a post on a social network, tag #gailbordenlibrary & #studio270.
    • Send a link of the post, your name, grade, and school to studio270@gailborden.info.
    • You will earn 15 minutes for a photo, 30 minutes for a short video, and 1 hour for a song, students can submit a maximum of 5 posts.

Instructions

  1. Apply
  2. Register for each volunteer session you wish to attend.
  3. Arrive at Studio 270 with your high school ID or library card on time. Volunteers more than 15 minutes late may have their spot filled from the waiting list.

Applications are available in Studio 270 and at the Information Desk or Apply Online. You only need to apply once throughout your high school career.

All scheduled opportunities are for the Main Library. If you would like to volunteer at the Rakow or South Elgin Branches please select the location on the online application and you will be contacted about possible opportunities.

Knitting for a Cause
Help us knit hats and scarves for those in need.
