Services & Policies - Youth Services

Youth Center
The Youth Center serves children in first through fifth grades. The Middle School Zone, which is located within the Youth Center, serves children and teens in sixth through eighth grades.

Children under age 8 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Audiovisual – DVDs, CDs, video games, and audiobooks are available to  check out. DVDs and video games are shelved in the Music Movies and More room. CDs and audiobooks are shelved in the Youth Center.

Aquarium – Come and look at the fish and turtle in our aquarium! 

Books – A variety of fiction and non-fiction books in both English and Spanish are available for readers in 1st through 8th grades. Magazines are also available to read at the library or check out.

Computers – Our computers feature Internet access, our online library catalog, and the same electronic resources that are found in Adult Services. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis for thirty-minute sessions.  

Crafts – Various crafts are available on U-46 no-school days and special holidays. Crafts are for children in 1st grade and older. (Crafts for younger children can be found in the Early Learning Center.) Each child may have one craft per day at no charge. Additional crafts are available at $.25 per craft. Coloring sheets are available as well.

iPads - Two iPads are available for children to check out and use inside the Youth Center. iPad sessions are limited to thirty minutes when others are waiting. To check one out, children must come to the Youth Desk and present a library card in good standing.

Globe – Locate Illinois as well as many other states and countries on our giant globe.

Kits – Books with a CD are available for check out.

Library Cards – Parents can decide when they want their children to have a library card. Please see a staff member at the Registration desk Area at Circulation to apply for your free library card today. Restrictions may apply.

Programs – We offer a wide variety of programs for children of all ages, including one-time special events as well as repeating programs. Please see our paper monthly calendars or the library's online event calendar for detailed program information.

Resource Room – Adults are welcome to use our resource room, which contains an Ellison Die machine, badge maker, laminator, paper cutter, and more. Fees are required for use of some equipment. Please bring your own paper and supplies. Please see a staff member in the Youth Center for more information.

Study Rooms – Need a quiet place to study? We have three study rooms available for youth to use on a first come, first served basis. Please see a staff member at the Youth Center Desk. A library card is required.

Toys – A variety of learning toys and games are available for check out, including science kits.
